Today we had a guided tour to appreciate some street-art in Cabbagetown and Reynoldstown, both historic Atlanta neighborhoods that have been hard hit by gentrification in recent years. Every November the art changes to reflect diferent social themes and to feature up and coming artists. We truly enjoyed the experience and the girls came back home inspired to make their own art pieces.
Reynoldstown was of special interest to us because it is one of the first black neighborhoods of Atlanta. It came together after the American Civil War when some free slaves gather to work in the railroad. Reynoldstown was a thriving neighborhood until the 1950s, when the railroad business started declining. By the 1990s gentrification was apparent when the neighborhood’s residents were 65% white and 35% black. Nowadays, the median home price in reynoldstown is $500k
